Funds for special school programs. In the last few years, the Rotary Club of Boulder City has granted about $6,000 per year to Boulder City public school teachers for special projects in their classrooms. Through our mini-grants we have sponsored a variety of literacy projects, and a project that helped first graders write, illustrate, and publish their own books. We have helped youth learn peer mediation skills for resolving conflict. We have helped teachers expand music, journalism, and history programs, just to name a few of the over 30 grants in past years. We are proud and glad to help these highly dedicated teachers provide better learning support for our young people. Teachers are encouraged to apply for our grants. Contact Us for the 2006-2007 forms.

Funds for library books. As an established school, the Boulder City High School Library's collection of books and reference materials had become very dated. Over the last few years, we have contributed over $25,000 to build the collection.

Service clubs for youths. Boulder City was the first city in the world to have Rotary clubs for youth from elementary through high school. The Rotary Club of Boulder City sponsors two clubs for our young people.

Kideract Club, known as Cobras Making a Difference, was instituted in 2000 at Martha P. King School. Over the last three years, the club has grown from an initial membership of 35 to over 100 member as of May, 2006. Jr. Interact at Garrett Middle School began in early 2002 with six members. Since then, it has more than doubled in size. Both clubs have performed a number of community service projects. They planted trees and shrubs at the ABC park Georgia Avenue wall and the new part of Adams Boulevard. They visited with seniors at the Senior Center and read to younger children at local preschools. They worked on the "Tile our Town" project to decorate the Art Center at ABC park. They laid a new section of sidewalk at the Mountain View Care Center so wheel chair residents can enjoy the outside patio. The High School Interact Club is sponsored by our sister club, the Sunrise Rotary Club.

International Service Projects

The Rotary Club of Boulder City has reached beyond our borders to help people in other parts of the world. Recent projects have focused on India. In 2006-2007, we also plan to reach our southern neighbors with projects in Mexico and Central America. Always, we are proud to cooperate with host clubs and other U.S. clubs to sponsor projects.

Service Projects in India:

Over the past five years we have been helping residents of Pune India, a large industrial city about 125 miles southeast of Bombay. In true Rotary spirit, our club has teamed with the Pune Tilak Road club to address needs of education and health among the needy there. In addition to the contributions from our two clubs, we solicited funding from other Rotary clubs in the Las Vegas area, the Rotary Foundation, Rotary District 5300, and individual contributors. Our funding enabled purchase of materials and equipment in India, which saved costs of customs and shipping, and provided maximum benefit for the dollar spent.

Completed Service Projects in India:

  • Laboratory equipment and class room furnishings for an agricultural extension school that helps to educate rural farmers.
  • A Doppler Blood Flow Monitoring Instrument for a hospital which treats indigents.
  • Software for a computerized Blood Bank data collection system and blood bank laboratory equipment for a hospital.
  • A fully equipped Neonatal Ambulance to be used to transport new born babies to an orphanage where they can receive proper care.
  • Classroom supplies, duplicating and audio visual equipment for a rural school near Pune.

Current Service Projects in India:

  • Portable toilets for the village of Alandi which has many visitors coming to its local shrine and is totally lacking in sanitary facilities to serve these visitors.
  • Supplies of Vaccines to carry out an inoculation program against childhood diseases at an orphanage in Pune.

Polio Plus Service Project

New Service Projects in Mexico

During the Rotary year 2006-2007, the Rotary Club of Boulder City, in conjunction with our Kideract and Junior Interact Clubs, plans to launch projects in Mexico and Central America.

Raising Funds for Service Projects

Member Contributions
Member support club, Rotary International and District 5300 operations, activities and services through dues, meal charges, and fees for events. Members also make voluntary contributions to the Paul Harris Foundation, Polio Plus, and other Rotary International programs to support the ongoing work of Rotary throughout the world.

Cruises and Trips
Over the last few years our major fundraisers have been cruises and trips to wonderful places near and far -- Mexico, New England and Canada for fall colors, Panama, Vietnam, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. Skillful and generous club members organize, market, and host these trips that attract travelers from throughout the area. Over $100,000 has been raised to support community projects. Special thanks go to Bill and Elaine Smith who arranged these trips and to the many people who enjoyed them.

Community Events
These are another source of fundraising for our club. Best Dam Barbeque over Memorial Day Weekend brings in out-of-towners who contribute for local projects. At the 4th of July Pancake Breakfast community members donate for local projects. These events provide funds, create awareness of Rotary in the community, and attract new members to our club and community service.

Hensel Ethics Essay

Two Boulder City students recently received top awards in the Rotary International District 5300 George R. Hensel Ethics Essay Contest. Victoria Miller took first place at the district level, representing the Rotary Club of Boulder City (the Noon Club), and Nia Jennings, representing the Sunrise Rotary Club, placed third. Both girls won cash prizes at the local level. Additionally, Miller received $3000 for her first place district finish while Jennings received $500. Rotary District 5300 includes all of Southern Nevada and Southern California almost to Los Angeles. There are approximately 50 clubs in the district.

The George R. Hensel Ethics Essay Contest is designed to challenge high school students to analyze ethical issues and concerns confronting them in today's complex world.

Miller's winning essay related a story of how her eyes carelessly drifted to a classmate's paper while taking a test, and the ethical dilemma this created. Both girls received their awards at a recent meeting of the Boulder City Rotary Club at St. Jude's Ranch for Children. The first place essay can be read in its entirety by clicking here.
